Port Talbot Borough Council employed Demolition Services Limited to demolish and remove from site 4 No. redundant reinforced concrete gas purifying tanks containing 5,700 tonnes of toxic waste at the former Port Talbot Gas Works.

The first task was to remove the acidic spent iron oxide which had a cyanide content as high as 8%, followed by the cleaning of the walls and floor of each tank in order that residues could be removed prior to carrying out the structural demolition and site clearance of the reinforced concrete tanks.

The contract was successfully completed in 16 weeks employing the assistance of an independent chemist monitoring the works in order that the toxic waste was removed in accordance with the guidelines of current legislation. This work involved the use of air line breathing apparatus to give maximum protection to the workforce.
